History of the creation of the Yerevan Branch of Lomonosov Moscow State University

 

Serzh Sargsyan - Honorary Professor of MSUThe foundation of the branch of MSU in Armenia was laid on October 24, 2011 during the meeting of RA President Serzh Sargsyan with MSU students in Moscow. On this day by the decision of the Scientific Council of MSU the President of Armenia was awarded the honorary title of professor of Moscow University. MSU Rector V.A.Sadovnichy presented a diploma and a medal to S. A. Sargsyan for his outstanding contribution to the strengthening of ties between Russia and Armenia, development of science and education for the benefit of Russian and Armenian nations, and effective cooperation with MSU.

The process of opening a branch of Moscow State University in Yerevan was rather long.

Fursenko, Andrey AleksandrovichAfter the meeting of President of Armenia with students of MSU, the need to launch a branch of this renowned Russian school in Yerevan was discussed between two Ministers of Science and Education – Andrei Fursenko and Armen Ashotyan. Hence, on February 7, 2012 Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Viktor Zubkov announced the opening of the branch during his visit to Armenia.

Several months later it was discussed on a higher level between presidents of the two countries. As a result of negotiations the question was included on the agenda of Intergovernmental Commission.

On June 17, 2013 the MSU Scientific Council adopted a resolution to establish a branch in Armenia and discussed the establishment concept. On August 14, 2014 the Government of Armenia approved of the project to open a branch of Lomonosov Moscow State University in Yerevan.

Signing of the terms of establishment and operation of Lomonosov MSU branch in YerevanThus, on February 20, 2015 a Memorandum was signed in the library of the MSU regading the establishment and activities of the branch of Lomonosov MSU in Yerevan. During the ceremony of signing the rector of Lomonosov MSU underscored the importance of opening the branch where young men and women of Armenia and other countries will receive top-quality education based on MSU standards. The creation of the MSU branch in Armenia is a powerful international education project and a significant social event for the two friendly countries.

It is worth mentioning that the MOU on the terms of Lomonosov MSU branch establishment and activities in Armenia was singed in the very historic days when Armenia joined the Eurasian Economic Community.

The building of the branch is ready to be used. Departments have been set up as well. The best faculty of the MSU will join to teach in the branch.
